Toolbar

The toolbar (command bar) provides quick access to network interface selection, scan controls, and all major PingStalker tools.

Toolbar Overview

Interface Selector

The leftmost section of the toolbar controls which network interface you're monitoring.

Interface Selector

Interface Dropdown

Select from all available network interfaces on your Mac:

  • Wi-Fi interfaces (e.g., Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 2)
  • Ethernet interfaces (e.g., Ethernet, USB 10/100/1000 LAN)
  • Virtual interfaces (e.g., bridge, utun, awdl)
  • Other interfaces (Thunderbolt Bridge, iPhone USB, etc.)

Display Format: Interfaces show their display name (e.g., "Wi-Fi") with the interface identifier in parentheses (e.g., "en0")

Effect of Selection: - Updates the Interface Details pane - Changes which network the Network Scan will scan - Updates the Ping Monitor default hosts (gateway, local IP) - Affects which interface the Network Logs monitor

Refresh Button

Click the circular arrow button to refresh the interface list. This is useful when:

  • Connecting/disconnecting network cables
  • Toggling Wi-Fi on/off
  • Connecting to VPNs
  • Adding USB network adapters
  • After system network configuration changes

Refresh Button

Scan Controls

The center section controls network scanning operations.

Scan Controls

IP Range Start

Enter the starting IP address for your network scan. This field:

  • Auto-populates based on the selected interface's network
  • Can be manually edited
  • Validates IP address format
  • Supports any valid IPv4 address

Example: For network 192.168.1.0/24, typically set to 192.168.1.1

IP Range End

Enter the ending IP address for your network scan. This field:

  • Auto-populates based on the selected interface's network
  • Can be manually edited
  • Validates IP address format
  • Must be greater than or equal to the start IP

Example: For network 192.168.1.0/24, typically set to 192.168.1.254

Host Count Display

Shows the number of IP addresses that will be scanned based on your start and end range.

Example: Range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 = 254 hosts

Note: Larger ranges take longer to scan. The 11-phase scan process checks each IP for: - ARP responses - Ping responses - Open ports - DNS names - Device identification

Scan Button (Start/Stop)

The green play button (▶) initiates a network scan.

While Scanning: - Button changes to show a spinner/progress indicator - Scan results appear in real-time in the results table - Status updates appear in the footer - Button becomes disabled during scan phases

Usage Tips

Quick Interface Switching

When troubleshooting multi-interface issues:

  1. Use the interface dropdown to quickly switch between interfaces
  2. Observe how the Interface Details pane updates
  3. Run scans on different networks
  4. Compare routing tables between interfaces

Pre-Scan Configuration

Before starting a scan:

  1. Verify the correct interface is selected
  2. Check the IP range matches your network
  3. Note the host count (larger scans take longer)
  4. Clear previous scan results if desired (footer → Clear Results)

Efficient Workflow

Most common workflow:

  1. Select your active interface (e.g., Wi-Fi)
  2. Verify IP range is correct (usually auto-populated)
  3. Click Scan button to discover devices
  4. While scan runs, monitor the Ping Monitor and Network Logs
  5. Use tool buttons to launch utilities as needed

Toolbar Customization

Currently, the toolbar layout is fixed, but all tools remain accessible via:

  • Toolbar buttons (visual)
  • Menu bar items (organized)
  • Keyboard shortcuts (fastest)

Now that you understand the toolbar controls, explore the Interface Details pane to see what information PingStalker displays about your network interfaces.
